The U.S. Department of Transportation has released the 2012 statistics on highway deaths. The number of fatalities had not increased since 2005. Between 2011 and 2012, there was an increase in traffic fatalities of 3.3 percent. In addition, the number of injuries due to highway accidents increased by almost seven percent.
The reasons contributing to these injuries and deaths are varied. Over 50 percent of the people killed in a car accident did not wear a seat belt. Over 30 percent of traffic accidents were due to drivers under the influence of alcohol. Impaired driving was not limited to alcohol consumption; distracted driving caused by texting, emailing and changing the radio station were all contributing factors to highway fatalities and injuries in 2012, as well. The District of Columbia seems to be the safest place for drivers. DC reported the lowest number of highway fatalities caused by alcohol. However, Texas drivers should be concerned, because that state reported the highest number of highway fatalities due to alcohol.
There seems to be a connection between those who purchase vehicles with an abundance of safety features and reckless driving. A 1975 study conducted at the University of Chicago showed that those with safer vehicles seem to take greater risks behind the wheel. We seem to have a tendency to put faith in technology, rather than focusing on a safe driving technique.
