Study finds red-light cameras protect children

If you drive in the New Orleans area, you probably dislike red-light cameras. You may even think they are unfair.

Red-light cameras are scattered throughout the intersections of New Orleans. And while they may seem like an annoyance to some, a recent study suggests that they do more than just hand out traffic tickets. They may save lives.

Cameras keep roads safe for children

Red-light cameras don't just save some lives. They save hundreds - nearly 1,300 in 2014 according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The study, which was presented last month at the American Academy of Pediatrics national conference, indicates that children are more likely to be victims of traffic accidents in areas that do not actively enforce their red-light-camera laws.

What this likely means is that drivers are more cautious about speeding through a red light when they know the cameras are operating and the footage is being reviewed.

The study found that when cameras were turned off in an area, the number of serious accidents increased substantially. Those involving a driver who ran a red light increase by 30 percent.

Other safety measures also linked to child safety

The researchers who conducted the red-light-camera study also looked into how other safety measures impact mortality rates among children.

As you might have guessed, they found direct links between wearing a seat belt and lower rates of death among children. Researchers estimated that if 10 percent more people used seat belts or car seats, the lives of 1,500 children could be saved over a five-year period.

What does this mean for personal injury law?

This information will not have a large impact on personal injury law, but it can help inform drivers of the risks of running a red light or failing to wear a seat belt.

In Louisiana, running a red light is not only dangerous - it is also illegal. If you are involved in an accident with a driver who ran a red light, it is important to know that you have rights. A personal injury lawyer can help explain your options for seeking compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other damages.
