Fidget spinners can cause injuries, some parents want recall

As New Orleans residents may know, the latest fad in toys amongst children nationwide are "fidget spinners." However, some parents are calling for a recall of the popular toy after several children swallowed metal discs on the toy that would become loose and fall off.

Fidget spinners were initially meant to help children who have attention or sensory issues maintain their ability to concentrate, by keeping their hands busy. However, they have since become popular with children of all ages and abilities. Unfortunately, there have been reports of children being seriously hurt by the toy.

For example, one child who swallowed a disc that had fallen off the toy required surgery to remove the piece of the toy from his body. In another instance, a 10-year-old girl put the toy in her mouth and choked. A 3-year-old child was injured when a bearing on a fidget spinner that he put on one of his fingers would not come off. There have also been other reports of kids swallowing pieces of the toy.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is looking into on these incidents. According to a CPSC representative, choking hazards from children's toys are a high priority for the CPSC. The representative noted that they are still in the beginning stages of their investigation, and those who have had instances of children being hurt by fidget spinners should let the agency know of the issue as soon as possible.

It remains to be seen whether the CPSC will issue a recall for fidget spinners or whether the company making them will voluntarily recall the product. However, even if the toy is recalled, it is too little, too late, for those whose child was already hurt by the allegedly defective product. Parents deserve to trust that toys they give their children are safe, so any injuries caused by defective children's toys should be reported as soon as possible. In some cases, it may be possible to file a products liability suit, to pursue compensation for injuries caused by the dangerous product.
