Fatal accidents can be avoided if drivers remain attentive

In the last week alone several fatal car accidents have occurred in a Louisiana town. According to highway troopers, each of these wrecks may have involved inattentiveness and could have been avoided if drivers had remained aware of their surroundings as well as changing road conditions. They reminded drivers to follow the rules of the road, including traveling at the legal speed limit and not driving beyond their vehicle's capabilities.

The most recent car accident involved two vehicles. A 34-year-old driver overtook a number of vehicles while traveling along a northbound lane. He lost control of his vehicle when he tried to get back into his own lane and his car began to spin around. While he was still in the wrong lane, he was struck by a pickup truck. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The driver of the car sustained serious head injuries and died as a result. The truck driver suffered injuries for which he received medical attention.

The truck driver was given a breathalyzer test and police have submitted blood samples for forensic testing, but alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the accident. No charges have been filed so far.

Louisiana residents injured in car accidents may be able to file a personal injury claim against distracted, drunk or negligent drivers to hold them accountable for their part in the accident. Depending on the circumstances, they may be able to recover compensation for medical expenses, property damage and pain and suffering.
