Drunk driver narrowly avoids collision with police car

Negligent driving due to intoxication can produce one of the deadliest types of car accidents. When inebriated individuals get behind the wheel they are a danger to themselves and all who come in their path. The quick thinking of a Covington police officer recently prevented what could have been a deadly Louisiana car accident.

Around 2:00 a.m., a pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction on a bridge at Claiborne Hill. According to police, the truck was driven by an intoxicated man accompanied by two friends who were also drunk. The patrol car narrowly escaped a collision by driving into the barrier leading to the overpass. The patrolman turned around his vehicle and pursued the driver, who turned out to lack a Louisiana drivers license.

Since the incident involved a local police officer, the investigation was turned over to Louisiana State Troopers. Fortunately, the Covington officer that encountered the wrong-way truck did not sustain any injuries. In another stroke of luck, his police car only had minor damage.

This near accident did not produce any major injuries. However, many other car accident victims are not so lucky. Drunk driving is still a serious problem in our society. Injured victims tend to generate large medical bills that can pile up over time. Without help, it is sometimes hard to receive compensation for lost wages, medical bills and any future care that may be required.

Insurance companies, for example, often serve as a formidable barrier to recovering for medical expenses. A personal injury attorney can fight for a victim’s rights and ensure that he or she receives the compensation that is deserved.
