Common delayed auto accident injuries

On Behalf of | May 6, 2021 | Auto Accidents |

A vehicle accident in Louisiana can cause a range of traumas from minor scrapes to serious traumatic brain injury. Drivers often think they didn’t get injured, but symptoms appear much later. This happens because the body’s fight-or-flight response masks the symptoms. Here are some of the injuries a victim may not know they have until well after a crash.

Whiplash

Whiplash causes the head to violently snap back and forth, and it can occur at speeds of 14 mph or less. The impact of the accident causes the muscles to get out of alignment, but symptoms may not show up immediately.

Some common symptoms include headaches, stiff neck and back, numbness in hands or arms, tinnitus and dizziness. Many whiplash cases heal themselves if the patient follows a proper treatment course. However, certain factors could influence the outcome, such as patient age, previous whiplash and existing back conditions.

Concussion

Drivers commonly experience headaches after a vehicle crash, but it could be a sign of a concussion. A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that occurs from hitting a hard object. In a vehicle, the head may hit the steering wheel or dashboard or be struck by flying debris.

Sometimes, the driver or passenger gets knocked unconscious, but concussions can happen without loss of awareness. Some common symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion and blurred vision.

Herniated disc

The jelly-like discs in the spine have a harder outer layer and serve as shock absorbers to the vertebrae in the spinal column. The impact from a crash sometimes causes a disc to protrude or rupture from the spine.

Since the discs help the spine flex, injury to one can cause pinched nerves and severe pain. Some other common signs of a herniated disc are pain that worsens when doing certain motions, leg and arm pain, numbness, weak muscles and tingling. Many patients with herniated discs do not need surgery, and doctors commonly prescribe home treatment.

Drivers or passengers harmed in car accidents should seek treatment for their injuries. While many cases are settled out of court, some insurance providers ignore claims or make low offers, so the injured party may need a lawyer.
